Song 117
Hello everyone, welcome back to the blog. I have a another song by The Used, and I know what you might be thinking. "Do you have an obsession with this band?" Well, to answer that no I do not. I just really like them, and I happen to come across some of their songs by accident. (Which is how I find most of the songs I review) But let's get into the actual review, shall we? The song is called The Lonely. And I like this one, because it's so different. This band is usually all about rock/hardcore sometimes they do pop as well. Which I think is what happened in this track. I like when bands are versatile like this, it shows how talented they are, and how they can branch out to other genres. The intro to this song is kind of unique to me, it has this really smooth drum beat going. With what I can only describe as light beatboxing. Moving us into the first verse: "I see that face, that look in your eyes. It's so hard to hide that look in your eyes, you've been kicked down so many times. Yeah you've tasted the dirt, and you know what it's like." I believe they are potentially talking about bullying, or just having gone through a rough time. But this is just my interpretation of course, I'm sure other people might think of it differently. Next we have the pre-chorus: "Fill up your cup, fill it up to the top. Take a sip, spit it out. And fill it back up. Cause you said half full, is never enough. All alone and you've had enough." I'll just leave this part alone. Moving on to the chorus: "Don't let me be, don't let me be. All by myself, that's not how I felt. Do I deserve to be one of the lonely? Hold my hand, stand by me. All by myself, that's not how I felt. No one deserves to be one of the lonely. Hold my hand, stand by me." I really like the message that's coming across here, he's letting people know that he's there. He won't let them be alone, or feel lonely. Also the "all by myself" had a bit of a Celine Dion moment, it almost sounded like that song. Fun Fact: it's a common misconception, that All By Myself is Celine Dion's song. But that's not true, she just did a cover of it. The person who actually wrote the song is Eric Carmen. Okay, moving right along to the second verse: "I've got that face, that look in my eye. It's impossible to hide, that look in my eyes. I've been kicked down so many times, yeah I've tasted the dirt. I know what it's like." Now he's sharing his own experiences, as a way to connect. I do this as well, I try to talk about my own experiences as a way to relate to someone else who's going through a similar situation. Next is the bridge, I love how the tone changes in this part. "How many times will we forgive, what we just can't forget? Time after time and still, we let it happen again. How many times do we, deserve exactly what we get? I never wanted, no I never wanted to be. All by myself." I feel like this explains some of the school systems antibullying policies. Because some of them aren't the greatest, I think my high school had a decent one. But I know that's not the case with every high school. Which is sad, and they really need to better ones in place. Either way, a great song with a great message, and different from their regular stuff. I think that also adds something special to this track.
That's it for this review, I will see you in the next one. Happy listening. :)
